HINDI lamang sa kababaihan mahalaga ngayon ang ‘proper grooming’ kundi maging sa kalalakihan. Alam mo ba na may mga lalaking maituturing na ‘badinoso’ na masyadong concern sa ganitong pangangalaga sa sarili dahil para sa kanila, nakatutulong na makalikha ng ‘very good impression’ sa isang indibiduwal at makatulong na maiangat ang kaniyang professional career.

Kapansin-pansin sa ating paligid na may mga taong masasabi nating matagumpay sa kanilang piniling propesyon sa larangan ng pelikula, entertainment, palakasan, negosyo o pulitika, makikita mo na sila’y ‘well groomed’ at ‘well behaved.’

Ang ‘good grooming’ sa kalalakihan ay hindi nangangahulugan na kailangan mong gumamit ng mga mamahaling ‘male grooming products’ o ‘male grooming kits.’ Nandiyan din sa paligid ang mga ordinaryong barberya na mahusay mangalaga sa kanilang customers.

Maliban sa sari-sari store, coffee shop, beauty parlors, ang barberya ay kilala din na umpukan ng mga tsismis na madalas ay may hatid na katotohanan na kinasasangkutan ng mga kilalang personalidad mula sa mga artista at pulitiko. Ika nga ng marami ‘kwentong barbero.’

Ang Porresbarbers, ay isa sa pinakabagong barbershop na binuksan kamakailan sa mataong lugar at ‘busy thoroughfare’ ng Kabihasnan Road, Parañaque City.

Layunin nito na magbigay ng abot-kayang halaga ng gupit at dekalidad na grooming services sa pagpapaganda sa sarili.

Ayon kay Jojo Navarro, isa sa apat na nagma-may-ari sa bagong bukas na Porresbarbers, ang isang maliit na negosyong gaya nito ay tila isang pagpapatuloy ng kanilang “high school project” sa pagitan nilang dating mga magkaklase sa high school na nais magsosyo sa isang negosyo habang pinayayabong ang kani-kanilang pansariling karera sa buhay.

Matatagpuan ang Porresbarbers sa ikalawang palapag ng Agape Center sa kahabaan ng Kabihasnan Road sa Barangay San Dionisio, Parañaque City.

Sinabi pa ni Navarro na ang naturang barbershop venture ay resulta ng maraming brainstorming sessions ng apat na dating schoolmates mula sa Parañaque Municipal High School (PMHS) na magkaroon ng karagdagang mapagkakakitaan.

Kasama ni Navarro ang tatlo pa nitong kaibigan—dalawa dito ay nasa communications business at isa ang nasa accounting profession – na bumubuo sa Kabihasnan branch ng Porresbarbers.

“We thought it’s time to give back to our community. Our lives were practically shaped by the ways and values of Parañaque. And we’re saying ‘thank you” by way of a barbershop that would cater to our community,” ayon kay Navarro

Nilinaw pa ni Navarro na dahil masyadong mataas ang singil sa pagpapagupit sa mamahalin o high-end salons at barbershops sa mga shopping malls, nais ng Porresbarbers na makatulong sa kanilang mga kabarangay sa pamamagitan ng abot-kayang singil sa pagpapagupit dagdag pa ang komportableng ambience ng lugar.

“We’re taking the mall barbershop outside and closer to the communities. This is our homecoming,” ani Navarro.

Sinabi pa ni Navarro, na konektado sa isang kumpanya ng memorial service provider, malaki ang naitulong sa kaniya ng dating kaklase at ngayo’y kasosyo na si Prudencio Gadil, para makumbinsi o mabuksan ang isipan sa larangan ng pagnenegosyo.

Si Gadil o mas kilala bilang “Dennis” sa larangan ng pamamahayag ay kabilang sa nagmamay-ari ng anim (6) na matagumpay na sangay ng Newsbarbers sa Metro Manila sa magkakaibang partners na karamihan ay kapwa niya mamamahayag.

Naniniwala kasi si Gadil na hindi panghabambuhay ang kaniyang karera sa ngayon kaya mas mabuti na magkaroon ng iba pang pagkakakitaan na isang maliit at sariling negosyo para hindi ‘mapilay’ kung sakaling biglaang mawala siya sa kaniyang karera.

“Porresbarbers is a barbershop enterprise targeting mid-level and community-based clientele,” ani Gadil.

“We want a barbershop that is community-based. The community must first embrace it before it can become a part of their daily lives,” pahayag pa ni Navarro.

Higit sa lahat nais ng grupo ng Porresbarbers na maibalik ang sinasabing ‘old world charm’ sa isang barbershop kung saan dito nakapupulot at nakikipagpalitan ng kuro-kuro at pala-palagay ang mga customer mula sa matatanda, kabataan, pulitiko, artista at mga kilalang personalidad.

“Before kasi di ba pag may gusto kang hanapin na tao o latest tsismis, sa barberya mo mapupulot yun? We want to continue with that tradition,” paliwanag pa ni Gadil.

Bilang patunay sa layunin ng Porresbarbershop na nais nilang makatulong na mabawasan ang gastusin ng mga magulang, sumisingil lamang ang ito ng mula sa P50 hanggang sa P70 para sa isang basic haircut at nagbibigay din ng mga serbisyo para sa kababaihan o female clients gaya ng nail art, facial at hair dye para hindi mainip habang hinihintay ang kanilang asawa o boyfriend na nagpapagupit.

Ang Porresbarbers ay isinunod kay San Martin de Porres, ang unang black saint na patron na saint of barbers ng mga mahihirap.

Barbershop operator Newsbarbers Co. is venturing into the mid-level and non-mall market with the launch of its first ever branch outside the mall called Newsbarbers Jr.

The first Newsbarbers Jr. is located inside UP Teachers Village in Quezon City along Maginhawa St. near the corner of Magiting St.

Terence Grana, Newsbarbers communications officer, said the company decided to go beyond the mall milieu to reach out to communities and its people who may have the time to go to the mall but still prefer a neighborhood haircut.

“The first and ideal place for a barbershop should be inside villages where people actually live or reside. You should be embraced first by the people in the village before you can serve outside,” Grana said.

He said choosing the UP Teachers Village area as launching pad for the Newsbarbers Jr. satisfies the company’s criteria of locating in thriving and middle-class communities.

“We’re happy to pick UP Teachers Village as our pilot for our Junior. And we hope they would welcome us into their homes,” Grana said.

He added that putting up medium-sized shops that are located in villages or communities was also part of the evolving commitment of Newsbarbers Co.

“We think it’s time to give back to our communities and this is our way of doing it,” he said.

Newsbarbers Jr. generally caters to upper low-end to middle-level market with services at affordable prices.

Grana said all Newsbarbers Jr. clients would be treated just like their mall-based customers.

“it’s a barbershop with a ‘mall attitude’ but with affordable prices,” he said.

He also said Newsbarbers Co. wants to re-introduce the barbershop concept in communities and do away with its dirty and shoddy image.

“We want to go back into that era that barbershops played an important role in communities like some sort of a repository of information, a people’s directory and a venue for free exchange of ideas and opinions,” Grana said.

He stressed that the only difference this time is that the shops will be spic and span with the barbers in crisp and clean uniforms.

Grana said the company hopes to open another Newsbarbers Jr. in the latter part of the year when a good location turns up.

Newsbarbers Co. currently operates branches in SM Fairview, SM Hypermart Pasig, SM Taytay, Ever Gotesco Commonwealth, and Circle C Mall Congressional. Newsbarbers Co. is led by active media practitioners dabbling in the service business.

Barbershop operator Newsbarbers Co. recently opened its newest branch in Ayala’s Marquee Mall in Angeles City as part of its expansion in the provinces particularly in Northern Luzon.

Newsbarbers’ Marquee Mall branch is the company’s second outlet outside Metro Manila.

Terence Grana, company spokesman and communications chief, said Newsbarbers will bring in the same brand of quality and affordable service to the people of Pampanga, which has emerged as one of the growth centers in North and Central parts of Luzon.

“It’s the same quality service that we’re bringing to the people of Pampanga, which is affordable and accessible even to the low-income market,” Grana said.

He said Newsbarbers wants to break the myth that barbershops inside malls are pricey.

“Our prices are pocket-friendly especially during this economic crisis.We also want to capture the old world charm of barbershop where you can get the latest gossip and discuss some current events,” he said.

Grana said the decision to go north and use the Ayala brand as vehicle for its provincial expansion jibed with Newsbarbers’ belief that provinces should be developed as growth engines to ease the pressure on Metropolitan urban centers.

“We thought if you can’t bring the mall culture of Metro Manila to the provinces, we should be the ones to go to them and we’re glad Ayala tapped us to become one of the pioneering Marquee tenants,” he said.

Grana said for its Marquee branch, Newsbarbers has cooked up some crisis-busting promos like its “Pisong Gupit sa Ika-Limang Balik” where customers who make a fifth visit to the branch are treated to a P1 haircut.

He said Angeles City customers would also be surprised to learn that Newsbarbers is initially offering its basic haircut price under P100.

MANILA, Philippines - It’s not business as usual for this group of journalists. While newsmen would normally be in front of their computers chasing deadlines or out searching for stories, this particular bunch also chose to do business on the side.

Indeed, the story behind Newsbarbers is an interesting one.

Dennis Gadil, a veteran journalist for the Malaya newspaper and one of the pioneering investors behind Newsbarbers wanted to bring back the traditional idea of a barbershop.

He said that in the old days, when someone is lost or new in a community, the first thing that they go to is the neighborhood barbershop where information about a home address or a person could be had. You can even get the latest gossip from there.

“That’s what we want to recapture — the era when barbershops played a unique role in the community and not as a mere place of ‘kwentong barbero,’ he told The Star.

With this vision, Gadil invited fellow journalists to invest in the business.

It’s been a long time since the first branch opened in 2003. Newsbarbers now has another home – the IL Terrazzo Mall along Tomas Morato, Gadil said.

The IL Terrazzo branch is Newsbarber’s biggest in terms of area and the most expensive investment at almost P2.4 million.

“We used electric or automated barber chairs for this branch,” he said.

Gadil and business partner Zaldy de Layola , ex-reporter of People’s Journal and now working for Senator Noynoy Aquino, started the business. They opened the first branch at Ever Gotesco mall along Commonwealth Avenue.

“We invited Era Prado of Abante as our first partner or financial investor. Every branch costs P900,000 to build from an original capital of P500,000. We have to borrow from our friends and relatives to finish the project,” Gadil said.

At that time, Zaldy was already in talks with the crew of an existing barbershop who was willing to join him.

Zaldy came to the House of Representatives and floated the idea.

“We immediately applied for a space at the Ever mall but was only able to get feedback after almost a year. The rest is history. Newsbarbers was born!” Gadil said.

Aside from Ever, Circle C and Morato branches, Newsbarbers is also in SM Fairview, SM Pasig and SM Taytay.

The second branch, the one in Circle C Mall along Congressional came almost three months after the first branch opened.

Along the way, for the other branches, Gadil tapped other partners. These include Ryan Pacpaco of Taliba/People’s Journal, Fidel Jimenez of GMAnews.tv, TJ Burgonio and Norman Bordadora of The Philippine Daily Inquirer, Jess Diaz, Delon Porcalla and Kaye Adraneda of The Philippine Star, Gerry Baldo of The Daily Tribune, JP Lopez and Wendell Vigilia of Malaya and Edmer Panesa of Bulletin.

Non-media friends also became partners, namely Bong Arrezza, Mario de Layola, Jun Tatoy, Ana Ng, Nestor Ng and Orlan Maningas, Gadil said.

“The minimum investment is P100,000,” Gadil noted.

Gadil said Newsbabers is not your ordinary barbershop. Newsbarbers is people-oriented.

“The subtle difference is how we treat our workers. We treat them as co-partners in the business, as co-equals. If you know what I mean,” he said. The market response so far is encouraging.

“The way we treat and care for our people have been reaching the ears of our customers and other barbers from other salon have pending applications for us. Price-wise, they still see our prices competitive with the other leading barbershops,” Gadil said.

Newsbarbers was just in time when there was a major shift in the taste of macho men who were fed-up with beauty parlors manned by gay hair stylists. The exodus to barbershops was just beginning when Newsbabers entered the business.

The macho men and their kids never looked back, Gadil said.

“Aside from death and taxes, I think one regular occurrence in our life is that we grow hair and we ought to cut them,” Gadil said.

1. How do interested party/ies apply?

Interest parties are required to submit a formal letter of intent including information on their background and existing business/s if they have.

The franchise applicant is also requested to name at least two possible locations that they think would be suitable for a Newsbarbers branch.

2. What is the minimum area for a Newsbarbers shop?

The ideal area is between 40 to 55 square meters, preferably located inside a mall, which could accommodate seven to eight barbers chairs.

Prospective shops located outside the mall milieu could be between 30 to 45 square meters with parking provision for at least two cars.

3. How much is the franchise fee?

The franchise fee for a mall-based Newsbarbers shop is P500,000 for a five-year term. Outside the mall is P250,000 for three years. This is exclusive of the total cost of putting one Newsbarbers shop. The franchise contract is renewable upon expiration.

The fee covers the following:

- Use of Newsbarbers name and trademark

- Finding/securing a suitable location

- Recruitment and training of staff

- Managerial training and other assistance

- Construction assistance

4. How much capital is needed to put up a Newsbarbers shop?

The capitalization for one Newsbarbers shop is P2.5 million to P3 million when located inside the mall. When outside the mall, it is P1.5 million. The price may still vary depending on the size of the area.

This includes:

- Shop construction or improvement

- Construction/design management fee

- Advance rental/security deposits

- Licenses and permits

- Equipment and other effects (including barber chairs and fixtures)

- Initial stock/supply of service and office supplies

- Staff requirements

- Initial marketing and promotion

5. How much is the royalty fee?

The royalty fee is ten percent of the monthly gross sales.

6. Does Newsbarbers Co. provide possible locations or does the franchise applicant look for the site?

A. If a franchise applicant has a location or site in mind, Newsbarbers will evaluate its viability.

B. In the absence of a preferred available site, Newsbarbers will look for a prospective location on behalf of the franchise applicant.

7. What is the projected return on investment (ROI)?

ROI varies depending on the location and market. Rate of rental, operating costs and management policies are also key factors.

In some of our successful branches, the ROI is one and a half to two years.

8. How do you market/promote a franchise shop?

Bohol is an island province of the Philippines located in the Central Visayas region. Its capital is Tagbilaran City. It is the 10th largest island in the country, located in the heart of the Visayas. To the west of Bohol is Cebu, to the northeast is the island of Leyte and to the south, across the Bohol Sea is Mindanao.

Bohol is a popular tourist destination with its beaches and resorts. The Chocolate Hills, numerous mounds of limestone formation, is the most popular attraction. The island of Panglao, located just southwest of Tagbilaran City, is home to some of the finest beaches in the country. The Philippine tarsier, considered the second-smallest primate in the world, is indigenous to the island.

Boholanos refer to their island homeland as the 'Republic of Bohol' with both conviction and pride. A narrow strait separates the island of Cebu and Bohol and both share a common language, but the Boholanos retain a conscious distinction from the Cebuanos.

Hills dominate the island of Bohol. Two ranges run roughly parallel on the northwest and the southeast. An interior plateau is dominated by limestone hills. In Carmen, Batuan and Sagbayan, these hills form near perfect cones in great numbers and are collectively referred to as the Chocolate Hills.

Bohol's climate is generally dry, with maximum rainfall between the months of June and October. The interior is cooler than the coast. Bohol is the home province of Carlos P. Garcia, the fourth president of the Republic of the Philippines (1957-1961) who was born in Talibon, Bohol.

GEOGRAPHY

Bohol is the perfect arena for scuba diving, kayaking, trekking and cave exploration. For the less adventurous, it offers leisurely pursuits like cruising, swimming, snorkeling or, simply, collecting seashells by the seashore.

The Island of Bohol is oval-shaped mainland surrounded with 73 smaller islands, having a gently rolling terrain, ideal for commercial and industrial site development. Bohol's mountainous interior is home to rare and endangered flora and fauna. At certain points, hills drop steeply to the coast from a maximum elevation of 870 meters above sea level. The interior uplands are fit for agro-forestry and high value agricultural production. The central and northern lowlands have also fertile grounds and abundant water supply. Over a hundred caves have been identified, the biggest of which is found in the eastern part which makes Bohol ideal for spelunking adventures. The Chocolate Hills in Carmen, Bohol are considered one of Philippine's natural wonders and Bohol is often referred to as the Jewel of the Philippines.

Most beaches are of white sand. The sand is often of such high quality that it is exported to other beaches in the world. The most well known of these beaches are in Panglao Island, and there, numerous islets have similar, yet untouched and pristine beaches.

The Loboc River is the most famous, running from the southeastern coast to the center of the island. It is famous for its River Cruise going up to its water source. The largest, Inabanga River, runs in the northern part of the province.

Numerous waterfalls and caves are scattered across the island, including the beautiful Mag-Aso falls in Antequera. Mag-Aso means smoke in the native tongue. The water is cool and often creates a mist in humid mornings which can hide the falls.

Who would have thought that the barbershop where I previously had my hair non-existent has a blog?!? I just found earlier today an evidence that Newsbarbers blogs ! Hello! to everyone at Newsbarbers! Isn’t it nice!?! Another bonus was that the one who did my hair wasn’t talkative as the ones who cut me before (which was like I was on a 30-minute interview). I just kept quiet and for the love of God, I was only asked one question: What is your haircut? Building a business for employees – Newsbarbers’ Dennis A. Gadil (ENTERPRISER) - BusinessWorld – 24 July 2006

Tradition has it that we go to our friendly neighborhood barbershop, not only for a haircut but also to hear about the latest talk of the town, the community gossip or whatever news there is.

Dennis A. Gadil, a newspaper man, said this is a tradition he wanted to keep alive because he credits his narrative skills to his neighborhood barbershop in Paranaque, where he grew up.

Mr. Gadil has been working as a journalist for Malaya since 1993, covering mainly the legislative beats.

Because of this, Mr. Gadil, along with his fellow newsmen, thought of putting up Newsbarbers.

Mr. Gadil made sure, however, that his barbershop is no ordinary shop. More importantly, Newsbarbers is both a business and a venue to empower employees by teaching them not just about business but about investing.

Thus, its owners make it a point that its barbers will have the opportunity to become part owners through the money that they put in the company.

Mr. Gadil and former People’s Journal reporter Zaldy de Loyola opened the first branch at Ever Gotesco mall along Commonwealth Avenue in August 2002.

Now, barely four years since the launch of Newsbarbers, the group has three operating branches in Circle C mall in Congressional, SM Fairview and the one in Ever Gotesco. The group will open two more this year – one in SM Bacoor and another in SM Pasig.

The opportunity came when eight seasoned barbers defected from an existing shop because of poor labor practices. Mr. Gadil and his colleagues thought of helping the workers by providing a venue where they could practice their skills under a labor-friendly environment. Now, the group is proud of how Newsbarbers has turned out.

“It’s basically the same service but the major difference is how we run the business and how we treat the employees,” Mr. Gadil told BusinessWorld.

His employees have, in fact, become investment partners, an opportunity they never thought would happen. Buddy Gonzales, the shop’s head barber, is now part owner because his employers encouraged him to put up his money into the business. He has also been appointed area manager.

“We also have a trust fund for employees that they can tap for loans in case of emergency or whatever need arises,” Mr. Gadil said.

Former radio journalist Terence Grana said the group would continue to maintain good service to their clients and help empower employees. The utility men or the janitors – there are at least two in every shop – are also trained to become barbers so they can earn more.

The group is also planning to expand the business over the next two years by opening it for franchise. “Franchising is the direction. We are looking at five franchises in two years,” Mr. Gadil said.

This bunch of newsmen-enterprisers, however, are not resting on their laurels. They have vowed to uphold the service and continue to teach and train their employees how to satisfy the customer.

And living up to its name, Newsbarbers also makes sure that clients can catch the latest neighborhood chit-chat, as well as the latest political and economic developments.

The television sets in each shop are tuned in to the news at the scheduled timeslots so that clients can listen to what’s happening.

Running the business, though, is not without challenges. Mr. Gadil complained about the tedious registration process in putting up the business, as well as the various tax requirements.

Mr. Gadil said it is not easy to run a business, but he advises would-be enterprisers to study the market first and familiarize themselves with what they are getting into.

“One has to master the formula of the particular business that he wants to get into,” he pointed out. In the case of Newsbarbers, the group chose to put up their businesses in malls because malling has become a one-stop shop experience for families.

This is in contrast to stand-alone barbers shops in commercial districts like Tomas Morato. Based on Newsbarbers’ experience, he said, it is more practical to have the shop inside malls because families would want to be able to do everything they want when they go out. The mother can do the groceries or shop with the children, while the husband can go to the barbershop while waiting.

But not all malls are ideal, he said. When asked why Newsbarbers did not expand in the newly opened Mall of Asia in Pasay City, Mr. Gadil said it is not the kind of mall where families would go to do the groceries or have a haircut. “It’s a very leisure-type mall,” he said. He also advises entrepreneurs to invite other investors if they want to put up a capital-intensive business such as a barbershop. If one can’t do it alone, it would be good to seek the help of other people. Investment in a barbershop can go as high as P900,000 to P1 million.

Newsbarbers Co. is a collaboration of young entrepreneurs who are active and semi-active members of the professional working media.

Established in late 2002, it was founded amid the growing challenge of finding an alternative source of income.

The group then decided that the grooming business could be the most viable venture to take.

The name Newsbarbers was chosen to aptly reflect the background of the people behind the company.

Moreover, the name Newsbarbers symbolizes a bygone era when a barbershop - a fixture that is old as the Romans and the Greeks - was the dispenser of goodwill and information in the community, the repository of gossips and the de facto registry of most sought-after village residents.

Thus, after formally registering as a partnership in 2003, Newsbarbers Co. set out to establish its first outlet in the lower ground level of Ever Gotesco Commonwealth Mall in Quezon City.

To further boost its capital, Newsbarbers Co. subsequently engaged the support of their other media colleagues and close friends as â€œpartners/investorsâ€? and proceeded to set up its second branch at the Circle C Mall along Congressional Avenue, barely three months after the inception of Ever branch.

Last December 2005, Newsbarbers opened its third branch at the SM City Fairview Mall.Currently, the company is finalizing the setting-up of two more mall-based branches in the province of Cavite.

MISSION/VISION

Newsbarbers Co. was founded on the belief that a business venture must not only be profitable but should deliver affordable service to its clients and, at the same time, create employment for the community it serves.

The Company also believes that whoever works in the business with utmost dedication must also be allowed to partake of the fruits of the enterprise either as future managers or partners/investors.

These are the driving forces behind the Newsbarbers Co.

To date, Newsbarbers has included the companyâ€™s head barberas one of the part-owners/investors.

1. The word "barber" was derived from the Latin word, "barba", which means beard.

2. Barbering dates back to antiquity. Barbers are mentioned in Egyptian, ancient Greece and Roman Folklore. Barbershops were favorite meeting place where everyone discussed the affairs of the day.

3. In folklore, the barber has been represented as a talkative person, the retailer of news, gossip, and homely advice.

4. The barbershop was a familiar institution in the ancient Greece and Rome and then, as now, was a center for the exchange of gossip and opinion.

5. Barbers flourished in large numbers inside monasteries and convents or religious houses where the monks or followers were required to be clean-shaven. They were familiar figures at the monasteries since 1002.

6. In early Christian monasteries, barbers rendered the important services of cutting and shaving the hair of the monks, who were required by ecclesiastical law to wear the tonsure.

7. The more prosperous citizens during the early times, particularly in Rome, had a barber as member of their house help and occupy a revered position in the household and therefore, became a status symbol.

8. The monastery barber was called "Rasor et Minutor" (barber and remover of blood).

9. The great houses of ancient Egypt also had barbers among their house help and offered free haircut as part of their hospitality to guests.

10. For six centuries, the barbers of Europe practiced surgery since most early physicians and university-trained doctors led by Arab physician Avicenna (980-1037) disdained surgery and considered bloodletting as beneath their dignity. Avicenna was the leading medical authority of medieval times. The custom began with the papal decree of 1163 that forbade the clergy to shed blood. They turned these duties over to the barbers. Surgery and other ministrations such as bloodletting, cupping and leeching, treating wounds, and extracting teeth. As barber-surgeons, they were accorded the address as "master" but the barbers preferred to be addressed as "mister."

11. Ambrose Pare, one of the great pioneers of surgery and regarded as the father of modern surgery, began his medical career as an itinerant barber-surgeon.

12. In France, a royal decree of 1383 declared that the King's first barber and valet was to be head of the barbers and surgeons guild that was organized as early as 1361. As members of the royal barber-surgeon guild, barbers were admitted to the faculty of the University of Paris in 1505.

13. The barbers of London were the first organized and recognized as a religious guild owing to their roots as monks' barbers but were granted a charter as a trade guild in 1462 by King Edward IV.

14. In 1743, King Louis XV prohibited barbers from practicing surgery and in England in 1745, the surgeons were separated from the barbers by acts passed during the reign of George II. Their final separation came in 1800 with the founding of the Royal College of Surgeons during the reign of King George III.

15. During their reign as barber-surgeons, barbers were sometimes called "doctors of the short robe" to distinguish them from university-trained physicians and surgeons whose superiority was only based on their knowledge to speak Latin and were given the title of â€œdoctors of the long robe.

16. The barbers trade was acquired only by a long apprenticeship until 1890s when schools for barbering were established.

17. In the United States, barbers are usually trained in special schools and must pass examinations and be licensed by the states in which they work. In the mid-1960s, there were 200,000 licensed barbers in the US, most of whom managed or were employed in small shops.

18.
